Canadian Diamonds
When diamonds were first discovered in the North West Territories in the late 1991, Canada did not anticipate that it would become one of the most renowned diamond producers. The country has since expanded its production to other areas and territories such as Nunavut and Yukon.
So Why Are Canadian Diamonds so Special?
Canadian Diamonds have rapidly gained a world reputation for quality and cleanliness. Cleanliness refers to the fact that they are not blood diamonds or conflict diamonds. They are what we call conflict-free diamonds. The Government of Canada ensures fair labor practices in all Canadian diamond mines.
High Quality vs. Price
Apart from the cleanliness factor, Canadian diamonds are also recognized for their very high quality. Some of them are considered brighter than any other diamonds in the world (of course you can take that with a grain of salt, but keep in mind that most of them are of very good quality!).
Should I buy Canadian Diamonds?
That’s a question of personal preference. You should know that if you buy from Canada or from the U.S., the Kimberly Process for Rough Diamonds also ensures that you will get conflict-free diamonds. Of course, an importer could still theoretically lie when filling out their certificate of origin with the Canada Border Services Agency or with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. In the end, if you buy a Canadian-mined diamond, you can be 99.9% sure that it is not a blood diamond!
